Percent of a Number Part II Congratulations - you made it to Part II. Here you will learn how to set up percent proportions regardless of how they are written. There are three ways a percent equation may be written. Copy these three examples into your notebook: What is 12% of 200? 32 is what percent of 400? 58 is 30% of what number? Now, notice that in each sentence, there is... A percent An "IS" word An "OF word What is 12% of 200? 32 is what percent of 400? 58 is 30% of what number? What??? An IS word...and OF word...I don't get it. Okay, slow down here and take a deep breath. Let's look for the percents first...Look below and see that I've underlined each percent. Now do you see them? What is 12% of 200? 32 is what percent of 400? 58 is 30% of what number? For the first one, it's 12%, the last one is 30%...but what about the middle one...it doesn't list a percent! You're right - that becomes the "x" in the proportion! What is 12% of 200? 32 is what percent of 400? 58 is 30% of what number? Time to find the IS words...Look again at the example. See them now? Again, the 'what' becomes the x in the proportion. What is 12% of 200? 32 is what percent of 400? 58 is 30% of what number? Time to find the OF words...Look again at the example See them now? Again, the 'what' becomes the x in the proportion. What is 12% of 200? 32 is what percent of 400? 58 is 30% of what number? Time for you to try. List the value for each part... if there is no value (it's a what), then list the answer as x. The first one is done for you: What is 6% of 72 Percent: OF: IS: x 72 6 Notice I am NOTincluding the percent sign! 52 is what percent of 78? IS: OF: Percent: What is 50 percent of 42? IS: OF: Percent: 52 is 12 percent of what number? IS: OF: Percent: 15 is what percent of 89 IS: OF: Percent: 34 is 14 % of what number? IS: OF: Percent: This ends Part II of this class. Again, you have to achieve a perfect score before moving forward. If you made a mistake please slow down and take this step by step - you can do it! |
