When you think about poetry.  I want you to think
about patterns.  Poetry is a story where words
are arranged into patterns.  Sometimes those
patterns rhyme, but sometimes they have a certain
number of syllables.  So, just remember, poems don't
have to rhyme, but they do have to follow a
pattern.
Poems are stories that   ___________.
rhyme.
have patterns.
have verses.
Stanzas
Poems aren't written like regular stories.  Poems
aren't arranged into paragraphs.  Poems are
organized into STANZAs.  Stanzas are groups
of words and sometimes they don't even have
periods.  There is no indenting in a poem.
Stanzas line up all lines and don't push in the first
line.
Poems are arranged into:

Poems often have a message and set a mood
for their audience.  A poem's mood can help
you understand what the author was feeling
when they wrote the poem.  The mood is
sometimes called "tone" as well.  Poems can
be funny, dark, sad, or even serious.  It
all depends on what the author was trying to
make you feel inside.

Good poets usually direct their poetry at a certain
group of people.  Who the poem is written for is
called the AUDIENCE.  The audience can be a group
of people or just one person.

Look at this example:

I know I'm only 9 years old...
I know you're younger than me...
I know your tail wags at my face...
I know you lick me to say hello...
I know you nip sometimes, but mean no harm...
I know when things squeak they drive you wild...

Good poets also like to pretend they are a different
person when they write the poem.  Poets write poems
as if they are a different SPEAKER.

The speaker is the person who is saying the
words in the poem.

Take a look at this example:
I sit in your desk each day
Waiting and waiting to cut away
Then I see paper and open a bit
changing its shape with each snip
after your done you put me away
so that I might eat another day
Who is the

A Volcano

Poetry usually uses great words to create patterns.
One type of trick a poet uses is Onomatopoeia.  It is
pronounced "ona-mata-peeya".  Onomatopoeia is
when the words is written like the way it sounds.

For example:  buzz, whirl, whip, bang, and zing.

Which words is an example of Onomatopoeia?
brakes
splat
car
llama
Another really cool trick a poet uses is called
ALLITERATION.  Alliteration is when you put
two or more words together with the same sound.
For example, The big brown bus bumbled down the
road.  Pretty fun to read isn't it?  Allterations don't
have to be long.  They can be just two words together.
For example, "Mr. Wonderful Willy was out for lunch."

What was the alliteration in that sentence?
was out
for lunch
Wonderful Willy
Mr. Wonderful
Check of any sentence endings that are an
allteration.

Joel was making his way toward the

soft simple seashore.
the giant peach.
