Found Art

We often think of reusing and recycling as something we just have to do. But some people see it as a chance to create. Any object can be reused to make something amazing. Reusing is more than a way to save; it can help us think about things in new and different ways.

Using found stuff to make art is not new. Found art became popular in the 1900s. Found art made people think about the things around them in a different way. Many things could be made into art!

Write T for True or F for False.

Plastic T-shirts

If you throw away a plastic bottle in the trash today, it will still be in the landfill for thousands of years. What else can we do with the 51 billion plastic bottles that are thrown away each year? Plastic bottles can be made into something new instead, like T-shirts!

How do plastic bottles become T-shirts? First the bottles are taken to a recycling company. There, the bottles are put into groups by type and cut into tiny little pieces. Then the plastic is washed and dried. The pieces are heated, melted, and turned into long strings. The strings are used to make clothes. A recycled T-shirt can be made with eight plastic bottles. A pair of pants can be made with 32 bottles. Making recycled clothing uses 70% less energy than new clothing, and it uses 90% less water!
