Animals in the Ocean

The mimic octopus is the only sea creature that can imitate

many different species. It changes its color. It also changes

its shape. It has arms as thick as pencils. When it spread them

wide, they look like the spines of a lionfish. It can hide some

of its arms in the sand but leave two arms out. Then with its

white and brown stripes and the two arms, it looks like a sea

snake! It can also pull its arms together and swim on the sea

floor so, to a predator, it looks like a poisonous flatfish!

____21.The mimic octopus is a sea creature.

____22.The mimic octopus cannot change its shape.

____23.The mimic octopus has arms as thick as pencils.

____24.The mimic octopus has white and brown spots.

Animals that Imitate!

Animals imitate other animals, but they can also imitate people!  You might already know

that birds can imitate people talking, but there have been other animals, such as an

elephant and a whale who “talk” like people.

The Korean elephant, Koshik, can say five different words: hello, sit down, lie down, no

and good. He “talks” by putting his trunk in his mouth. He doesn’t live with other

elephants, so scientists think he imitates talking so he won’t feel so alone.

NOC is a beluga whale that was studied by scientists in California. When people stood near

the area where NOC was kept, they would hear people talking, but there weren’t any other

people nearby! It was NOC! NOC talked and talked and talked. The sounds he made often

imitated the talk of two people in a conversation. He was imitating the talk he heard all

around him.

When NOC “talked” his voice was low, like a person’s voice.  The sounds whales make

are usually higher than a person’s voice. Scientists don’t know why NOC made these

sounds, but NOC did show them that whales can learn new things.

They didn’t know this before.

Scientists know that some animals can understand some words, but  they don’t think

NOC and Koshik understand what they are saying when they “talk.”

Kinds of InstrumentsThere are different kinds of instruments. The flute is a wind instrument. Like the sound of the wind, the music comes frommoving air. Some wind instruments have holes for fingers. Others have buttons to press. Another way to make music is with strings. The violin is a string instrument. When you slide a finger over a string or pluck it, it makes music. You can also make music by hitting or shaking something that makes a sound. That's because most things make a sound when you hit them. An empty space inside the instrument makes the sound louder. These are percussion instruments. The drum isa percussion instrument.

All About Electric GuitarsIf you like rock music, you probably like the sound of electric guitars. Electric guitars were an important instrument in bands that played dance music in the 1930s. When lots of people danced in one place, the instruments needed to be loud so everyone could hear them. Inventors discovered that adding an electric current to a wooden guitar made the sound of the guitar louder. Some musicians didn’t like the sound of electric guitars, but many jazz musicians loved playing the new instrument. They learned new ways to play notes andmelodies on the electric guitar. This new music was called rock music! As more audiences heard rock music with electric guitars, they started to like the sound. By the 1950s, bands with electric guitars were playing big concerts all around the world. Technology made it easier to make louder electric guitars, and to make electric guitars in any color and in different shapes. Inventors also made electric guitars with different numbers of strings and guitars that could make many different sounds.
