You might already know that birds can imitate people talking, but there have been other animals, such as an elephant and a whale who “talk” like people. The Korean elephant, Koshik, can say five different words: hello, sit down, lie down, no, and good. He “talks” by putting his trunk in his mouth. He doesn’t live with other elephants, so scientists think he imitates talking so he won’t feel so alone. NOC is a beluga whale that was studied by scientists in California. When people stood near the area where NOC was kept, they would hear people talking, but there weren’t any other people nearby! It was NOC! NOC talked and talked and talked. The sounds he made often imitated the talk of two people in a conversation. He was imitating the talk he heard all around him. When NOC “talked” his voice was low, like a person’s voice. The sounds whales make are usually higher than a person’s voice. Scientists don’t know why NOC made these sounds, but NOC did show them that whales can learn new things. They didn’t know this before.
